Guest Post: SEO – Optimizing Your Online Presence: Social Networking

Becoming a blogger is an exciting journey! You’ve created a website, chosen a name, made the commitment that it will take, picked the topics that you want to write about and possibly have your on-line image all set and ready to go. You may have professional or personal experience in regard to what you’re going to write about but the hardest part about writing is getting the readers that you want, and sometimes need, in order to take your blog to the next level.

If success is on your mind then be prepared to spend more time spreading the word about your blog than actually writing for it. Let’s face it, there are millions of websites on the internet and for someone to become your newest reader you’re going to have to make the best attempt to stand out and capture their interest…without annoying them with tedious tweets and Facebook status messages.

“If you build it they will come”. It’s much like life and the latest toy craze… it’s not always the product that makes something the next big thing; it’s word of mouth. When people hear of something, redundantly, they are often enticed to look into it more. “Okay I’ve heard this name a lot of times; what’s the deal?” and viola… you’ve earned another reader. Any random person can take an unpopular topic, or item, and make it something of epic proportions with the right mentality.

Social networking. In today’s day and age people from around the world are using social networking websites. The most imperative thing to keep in mind is your target audience. For example, I am a ‘mom blogger’ and I know that I want mom’s from around the world to view my blog and become my newest reader. Fortunately, it makes my target more achievable as there are countless websites geared towards Mom’s on the World Wide Web. Facebook.com, Twitter.com, MySpace.com are those general social networking sites that anyone can use and a very good starting point.

Time and commitment. The part that is time-consuming and the most complex is frequenting those websites on a regular basis and interacting with as many potential readers as possible. Although, I feel it’s important to mention that you can’t look at this as a job. You truly need to enjoy interacting with others who have the same interests as you. There’s more than one obvious reason for all of this and it goes without saying that no one wants to encounter someone who is merely befriending them to better themselves or their blog.

Respect and courtesy. The fun part about what I blog about are the friends I’ve made along the way. Taking the time to get to know so many people has truly enriched my life in ways that are unexplainable. When they visit my blog, facebook, twitter, etc. and make a comment I take the time to interact with them. One: it’s fun; there are amazing people out there! Two: I loathe nothing more than people who don’t take the time to respond to someone. People deserve respect and courtesy; bottom line. If you must, keep in mind that you are a representative of your product; your product being your blog. Keeping a professional internet representation is a must and ignoring a customer has never been a positive attribute of any business.

Sharing your posts. Not only is joining the networking sites and interacting with others important, but remembering to share what it is you want them to read, as well. They won’t know if you don’t tell. Put the information out there and make it available, but please do everyone a favor and don’t commit overkill. Send a post in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening to reach people who access the internet at different times. After that, use caution when sending out another tweet about it.

Sharing 101. When you send out your latest tweet, don’t be afraid to mention that you would appreciate a re-tweet (RT). There are plenty of people who don’t mind taking that extra second to pass along your information – utilize it. Albeit, don’t forget to return the favor (RTF) when they ask for the same.

Encourage interaction. When making posts don’t forget to involve the reader as much as possible and offer the chance to partake in the conversation; ask questions or ask for feedback. It lets the reader know that not only are you interested in what they have to say, but are open to hear their opinion, story and/or experience as well.

Show no fear. If you see another blog that you feel is everything you want your own to be… pay attention. If you continually see blogs that link to the same sites there may be very good reason for it; follow suit. In addition, don’t be shy or show reserve, when needing to make contact(s) with various companies – the most they can say is, “No thank you”. That means you’re one step closer to the one who will gladly take you up on their offer. Network with these companies even after you have completed what it is they wanted you to do is completed. Chances are they may need you again.

Strive. Much like life the world of a blogger has its ups and downs. You will have your good days and bad days; good posts and bad posts. Learn what works for your blog and pursue it with the utmost enthusiasm. When something doesn’t go the way you want to, re-evaluate, and strive to make it better. If you give up then all of your hard work will be irrelevant. Things will get better as long as you have the desire to make them so.

Be creative. Don’t limit yourself to just a certain target audience. Being a mom blogger not only do I network with moms, but fathers, and those who don’t have children as well. The more the merrier after all.

I truly believe with all of this information and a firm commitment to be successful in what your topic of expertise is… your blog will stand out. It’s an on-going commitment too, so don’t let the fact that your blog has 5000 readers deter you from thinking along the same lines as you did when you first began. Remember, it is those techniques that you utilized which got your blog where it is today and is apparently it’s been extremely beneficial.
